Bay Laurel is a women-led, LGBTQ+ web design agency based in San Francisco. We help small businesses grow online with values-driven websites that support sales, donations, and thriving communities.
When it’s done right, your website becomes one of your best business investments.
Every Bay Laurel website begins with our Online Success Program. This is where we step back, look at your business as a whole, and get clear on what your website actually needs to do.
We identify what is working, what is getting in the way, and how your website should support growth. You leave with a clear plan for structure, content, and priorities before any design or development begins.
This is how we avoid guesswork, wasted time, and websites that look nice but do nothing.
Every Bay Laurel website is built on the same foundation. These are not add-ons or upgrades. They are the essentials required for a site to support growth from day one.

Yes! The large majority of websites we build are designed so you can make basic updates on your own, such as editing text, swapping images, or publishing blog posts. We’ll set things up in a way that’s approachable and doesn’t require technical experience.
For more complex builds, including custom platforms or Ruby on Rails projects, the expectations are different. These systems involve custom code and interconnected functionality, and changes should only be made by experienced developers to avoid breaking features or introducing security issues.
If you choose a Custom Website & Platform Package, ongoing technical support is required.
For clients who want extra help on standard WordPress or Shopify sites, we also offer optional maintenance and support plans that cover updates, performance monitoring, and ongoing improvements.
Absolutely. Content migration is included in the project scope at no additional cost.
Level A accessibility is included as our baseline for all websites. This covers foundational accessibility requirements like proper heading structure, basic keyboard navigation, form labels, alt text for images, and other core elements that make a site more usable for a wider range of people.
Some websites require more than the baseline. If your business serves the public at scale, operates in a regulated industry, works with government agencies, healthcare, education, or legal services, or wants to significantly reduce accessibility risk, higher compliance levels may be appropriate.
WCAG Level AA is the most commonly recommended standard for businesses that want stronger accessibility and broader usability. It addresses color contrast, error messaging, focus states, and more robust keyboard and screen reader support.
WCAG Level AAA is the highest standard and is typically reserved for organizations with strict accessibility requirements, public-facing institutions, or mission-driven organizations where accessibility is a core part of the brand promise.
We offer AA and AAA accessibility upgrades for websites that require additional work and refinement beyond the baseline.
That’s a fair question. Platforms like Squarespace and Wix can work for very simple sites or early-stage projects where speed and budget matter most.
The challenge is that these platforms are designed to work for everyone, not specifically for your business. As a result, many sites built on DIY tools struggle once a business starts to grow. Layouts are constrained by templates, accessibility is often incomplete, and it can be difficult to adapt the site to how the business actually operates.
Another common issue is accessibility. While platforms like Squarespace and Wix advertise accessibility-friendly features, the responsibility ultimately falls on the business owner to configure things correctly. Many accessibility issues are structural and not obvious without experience, and most DIY sites miss important requirements without realizing it.
Professional web design goes beyond choosing a template. It starts with strategy. We look at how your business works, who you serve, and what your website needs to do, then build a site that supports those goals. That includes intentional structure, accessibility considerations, performance, and long-term flexibility.
For some businesses, a DIY platform is enough. For others, especially those focused on growth, credibility, accessibility, or custom functionality, a professionally built website becomes a better long-term investment.
Once your Online Success Session is complete, you’ll receive a clear roadmap for your website. If you decide to move forward, we’ll take care of the formal next steps first. This includes signing an NDA and service agreement and submitting the initial deposit.
After that, we’ll send an onboarding checklist outlining everything we need before development begins. This typically includes brand assets, access credentials, and any required integrations.
We schedule your website build only after all onboarding documentation is received. This is intentional. Website development is highly interconnected, and changes made mid-build can significantly impact timelines, costs, and technical decisions. Starting with everything in place allows us to build without unnecessary rework.
All of our time is important, and this process helps your project stays on track and deliver the best possible outcome.
We take on a limited number of web projects each quarter to allow every site to get the focus it deserves.

"I was excited to get an outside perspective on a professional issue I wasn’t seeing properly. It was quite thorough and I can easily see how that level of understanding could be helpful or beneficial. I think due to the depth of the conversation after each question was asked I was able to see more of the specifics of each issue I faced."
"An outsider's perspective can really open your eyes to your potential. I was expecting to have a lot of my weaknesses pointed out, which was a scary thought. What Lindsay helped me with was actually pointing out my strengths and how to optimize them... which was a lot less scary and emotionally taxing than my fears lead me to believe. I actually feel more hopeful for my business after our call, realizing I already have the building blocks to be more successful than I currently am."
"Everything that has come up since the case study started has changed the way I feel about the future. It seems way brighter. It's challenged how I see us networking ourselves as an organization, and my role in ensuring we are transparent, and give the wider community information as to how to get involved and support. Way beyond any expectations I could have set. I feel more purposeful, more useful. And today I know way more about how to manage a business and feel extremely capable."
"Lindsay is so engaging and easy to talk to, she's full of great ideas that are specific to my needs. Her values align with mine and my business and she has a great grasp of where I'm trying to be with my business and how I can get there. I now have a game plan for the upcoming year which has left me feeling optimistic when I wasn't really feeling that way beforehand."
